Protect Your Overall Health with Non-Surgical Sleep Apnea Treatment

If you struggle with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), it can severely diminish your quality of life. To help protect the overall health of patients, Dr. Gary Ludka offers non-surgical sleep apnea treatment to patients in Bowie, MD, and surrounding areas. He will begin with a thorough diagnosis, evaluating your symptoms and the results of your sleep study. If he determines that you suffer from the condition, he will collaborate with your regular physician to design a personal treatment plan. In most cases, a small, custom-made oral appliance can provide effective results with minimal discomfort and inconvenience. Contact Bowie Dental Sleep Center to schedule an appointment.

A sleep study is a trusted tool used to help diagnose OSA. You can often take this test in the comfort of your own home.

Diagnosing Your Condition

During your first visit, Dr. Ludka will discuss your symptoms to help make an accurate diagnosis. Alhough OSA can have a variety of side effects, snoring is one of the most common. Like many patients, you may not even be aware that anything is wrong because you are unconscious when snoring occurs. In other situations, you may be struggling with daytime sleepiness, or you may wake up suddenly during the night.

A sleep study is a trusted tool used to help diagnose OSA. You can often take this test in the comfort of your own home. During the sleep study, special equipment will measure your heart rate, oxygen levels, and chest falls during the night. A small tube in your nose will gauge airflow, and a microphone will record snoring. Dr. Ludka does not perform sleep studies at his practice, so he will refer you to a specialist in the area. He can also analyze the results of a past study, but please note that you do not need to undergo a sleep study before visiting our practice.

Treating Sleep Apnea with an Oral Appliance

Once Dr. Ludka understands your symptoms and the severity of your sleep apnea, he will coordinate with your main physician to determine the best course of treatment. We focus on non-surgical treatment of sleep apnea using custom-made oral appliances.

With this approach, you will wear an advanced oral appliance that will be specially designed to move your jaw forward so that your airway will remain open while you are asleep. Before we can create your device, we will need to obtain a prescription from your doctor. We offer several types of oral appliances, and Dr. Ludka will carefully select one that is right for you. Your oral appliance will be created based on detailed impressions of your teeth.

Monitoring Results for Optimal Outcomes

Once you begin treatment with your oral appliance, you will return to our practice at three-week intervals so that Dr. Ludka can monitor your progress. He will consider several factors when determining the efficacy of your appliance. The Epworth Sleepiness Scale will help him evaluate your level of alertness and the quality of your sleep. He will also consider additional subjective factors, such as whether your spouse reports an improvement in your snoring. If needed, Dr. Ludka will re-calibrate the device. Once we determine that the appliance is correctly adjusted, you will undergo a second sleep study to ensure optimal results.
